AA Hockey

The 2024-25 season marks the addition of AA Hockey to the AEHL.

In July, the AEHL announced the expansion to include AA Hockey, uniting the Northern Alberta Hockey League, South Central Alberta Hockey League and Hockey Calgary AA League.

“Members have and will continue to drive Hockey Alberta forward,” said Aaron Rawlake, Elite Commissioner. “This has never been more evident than the amalgamation of Elite Hockey into one system; a system focused on equity, competition, service, and respect for all players, officials, team staff and volunteers.”

With a total of 2,637 games being played across the U18, U16, U15 and U13 AA levels, 171 teams will hit the ice this season. Each level is divided into South, North Metro, North Rural and Calgary divisions.

“Bringing together three elite hockey leagues under one brand is a transformative step in the evolution of our sport,” said Trevor Hittel, AEHL’s AA Chair. “This unification represents not only a merging of talent, tradition and fanbases, but also a bold vision for the future of hockey. This allows us to honour the rich history and achievements of both leagues while setting the stage for innovation, inclusivity, and growth.”

With a goal of continuing to improve player experience for athletes in Alberta, AA Hockey operating within the AEHL enhances the synergies between AA and AAA hockey in all categories, raising the level of AA programming, and standardizing AA league operations across the province.

“Together we will continue to move Hockey Alberta to the forefront of Elite Hockey,” said Rawlake. “Best of luck to all players, staff and volunteers this season and beyond.”

U13 AAA Pilot

In the U13 AAA Pilot’s inaugural season, 11 teams will lace them up to play 165 games.

In June, Hockey Alberta announced the U13 AAA Pilot in Northern Alberta. Bonnyville, Fort McMurray, Hockey Edmonton (4), Grade Prairie, Leduc, Lloydminster, Sherwood Park and St. Alberta will all ice teams in the 2024-25 season. The Pilot is the first step towards this level of hockey being available to families across the province.

“We know that for the game of hockey to continue to grow, change and evolution are required,” said Devin Selte, Chair of the AEHL. “The AEHL is excited to take these steps with our AAA and AA divisions coming together under one united umbrella. The addition of the U13 AAA Pilot, along with more intentional focus on having AAA and AA associations provide insights improves the game.”

All U13 AAA Pilot games will be livestreamed on FloHockey.

The AEHL’s U18 AAA, U17 AAA, and U15 AAA schedules were released in August.
